Dare to Be a Daniel: Dare to Stand Alone

Daniel is one of the most preached prophets in churches today. He is famous for his many visions, interpretations, and prophecies. His prophecies cover a wide range of topics, including the rise and fall of empires, the coming of the Messiah, and the end times. Some of his most noted visions and prophecies are - The Four World-ruling Empires (Daniel 2:1-43); The Kingdom of God (Daniel 2:44; 7:13-14); The Little Horn (Daniel 7:7-8, 21, 24-25);  The 70-weeks Prophecy (Daniel 9:24-27); The Abomination of Desolation (Daniel 11:31; Matthew 24:15). The Time of the End (Daniel 11:40; 12:1; Matthew 24:21); and The Resurrection of the Dead (Daniel 12:2).

I remember when my friend preached a message titled, “Dare to be a Daniel, Dare to Stand Alone”. He looked at the actions of the prophets and his accomplishments but ignored his humanity and the real-life issues that he may have faced. Let us examine Daniel the man and glean some truths that we can apply to our own lives.

Traumatic Upheaval.

Daniel's name means "judgment of God" or "God my judge." He was a Jew and is believed to be a part of Judah's royal family. We don’t have much information about his earlier life. What we know is that he was taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon, and was made to serve as a eunuch in the Babylonian palace. Can you imagine how traumatic that experience was for him? Firstly, he experienced the devastating defeat of his king and the army of Judah. Secondly, he was taken out of his home and country and taken to a foreign land where he was castrated. Generally, when a man is castrated he will experience hot flushes and his penis will shrink. His erections will be rare and weak if they occur at all.

What Daniel experienced in being forcibly removed from his country, is similar to what the slaves who were taken from Africa must have experienced, the Jews during the Holocaust, and now the people in Gaza and Ukraine. Fortunately for me, I have never had such a horrible experience. Can you for a minute, imagine how you would feel if you had Daniel's experience? Based on what we learned about how Daniel was used by God, it is safe to assume that during the war with Babylon, Daniel was praying that God would give Judah victory. In our lives, when we are faced with challenging issues we fast and pray for deliverance. I think Daniel was doing the same before Judah lost the war.

Holy Spirit Intervention

When Daniel along with the other young Israelites were taken into captivity and brought to Babylon, castrated, and forced to learn the ways of the Babylonians, he could have lost faith in his God. I believe that it was the Holy Spirit in him that sustained him and prevented him from losing his mind. Many times, when we are in difficult situations and are not sure what to do, the Lord speaks to our spirits through the Holy Ghost assuring us in our spirit not to give up. Romans 8: 26-27, “But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities; for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

When we are facing such hurt, the Holy Spirit has to help us because we cannot make it on our own strength. 2 Corinthians 1; 3-5, “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.”

Give Good Service

Even though it may have seemed hopeless, Daniel trusted in God's provision. He felt that the Lord would change his situation and work it out for his good. Daniel faced various trials, but he kept his integrity and remained steadfast in his belief. His refusal to compromise demonstrates the value of staying true to our principles, even when faced with tempting offers or pressures to conform.

Daniel adapted to life in Babylon and carried out his duties, but kept his religious principles and customs. He maintained his diet, and his prayer life, and continued to worship his God. The quality of his work was outstanding, so he was promoted on the job and was highly respected by the king. This teaches us that when we are not in our desired field of work, wherever the Lord has placed us, we should still perform at our best and give excellent quality service. When you operate in this way, you will have favor with God and man. The Lord will open unexpected doors for you.

Life is Like That

As Daniel grew in favor of the king, there were some individuals who despised him and plotted to kill him. Sometimes people just don’t like you. That is just a part of life, especially when you are a devoted Christian, Satan uses people to try to destroy you. Faced with the prospect of death because of his prayer life, Daniel did not deviate from his practices or his beliefs. This highlights the importance of maintaining a strong spiritual connection with God and remaining consistent in prayer. Daniel remained steadfast in his faith. His perseverance in the face of adversity teaches us the importance of resilience and perseverance in times of trial.

Through Daniel's story, we see God's faithfulness to those who remain faithful to Him. His deliverance from the lion's den and from other trials, serve as a testament to God's faithfulness and His continued provision for His people.

Your Life an Example

Daniel's life, his sufferings, victories, visions, prophecies, service, and prayer life are examples we can learn from. Daniel’s faithfulness to God landed him in a lion’s den, where his detractors were sure he would be devoured. God, however, sent an angel that “shut the lions’ mouths” (Daniel 6:22), and Daniel was miraculously spared. This reminds us to live with courage, integrity, and humility, and to trust that God will provide for us, even during adversity. His unwavering faith inspires believers to stand firm in their convictions, and to remain faithful to God, regardless of the circumstances. I hope that, as Christians, our faith and lifestyle, like Daniel's, will inspire other believers to stand firm in Christ regardless of their circumstances.

Athletes Glorifying God Through Sports Without Fear

Have Athletes Always Expressed Their Faith Publicly?

"Almighty God was with me. I want everyone to bear witness, I am the greatest! I'm the greatest thing that ever lived. ... I must be the greatest. I showed the world. I talk to God every day. I know the real God. I shook up the world, I'm the king of the world," Ali said after defeating Sonny Liston for the first time on Feb. 25, 1964. Have athletes always freely spoken about their faith publicly?

In 2011, the Auburn Tigers won the BCS National Championship against the Oregon Ducks, Auburn coach Gene Chizik thanked God. The team's controversy-plagued star quarterback, Cam Newton, said he felt his performance showed what God can do. Do declarations like those influence their fans?

A teacher, a fireman, a doctor, a salesperson, or people in any other profession may be a person of faith. For Christians, the foundation of our faith is our belief in the Lord Jesus Christ, and regardless of our circumstances or differences that is the common denominator. Christian athletes lead a very public life. What they do is provide entertainment for others, but it is their job and is an important aspect of their lives. They are Christians living their lives in the public arena. Just like people who have any other career, their faith will influence what they do and how they do it. When they Give thanks to God and glorify Him publicly, we get a glimpse of how they keep going year after year.

Thanking God has now become almost commonplace among athletes in recent years. Many athletes are now publicly speaking about their belief in God during interviews. Some make the sign of the cross and others look and point upwards before or after they compete.  These gestures are not new, but they seem to have become more frequent. Why is that? And what impact does this have on their fans and those who participate in the sport?

Some Athletes Who Glorify God Publicly

8 athletes line up at the starting line for the finals of the 100 meters of the Olympics. The Starter's gun goes off and after a couple seconds, one person wins the race, and says “Thank you, Jesus.” Was it Jesus who made that person win? What about the others in the race who had prayed to win but they did not win or medal, what should they say?

In an interview with The Guardian, now-retired American track athlete Allyson Felix said: "My faith is the reason I run – it calms my heart and makes everything feel like a lift. My speed is definitely a gift from Him, and I run for His glory. Whatever I do, He allows me to do it." During her years as a track athlete, she spoke about how her faith in God helped her to deal with challenges such as injury. She is the most decorated Olympian to date, having won 11 Olympic medals: 7 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze.

Jamaican track athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce has never shied away from thanking God for giving her the gift of running. She has won 8 Olympic medals: 3 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze. She is also a five-time world champion in the 100m for women and has said that she will be retiring after the Paris Olympics. She speaks about her faith in after-race interviews, and other interviews, and writes about it on social media posts. In an interview just before the Commonwealth Games in 2014, she told an interviewer, “Christ comes first for me”.

Sidney McLaughlin-Levrone is another American track athlete who has publicly declared her faith in God. She is the current world record holder in the 400m hurdles. She is a 2-time Olympic champion and a 3-time World champion. Sidney has authored the book, "Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith", which was released earlier this year (2024).

Two-time World champion in the 100m Hurdles for Women, Danielle Williams, spoke to students during morning devotion at the high school she attended in Jamaica, the Queen's School. She encouraged them to have faith in God and to be confident that they will get opportunities to utilize their gifts. She also told them that it was important for them to glorify God in all that they do.

Four-time Olympic medalist (one gold, one silver, and two bronze) in diving, David Boudia, became a Christian in 2010, after struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. In his book Greater Than Gold, he wrote, "I realized that my greatest accomplishment in life was not something I did but something I received. I received the gift of God through faith in Jesus Christ."

These are just a few of the many athletes who have publicly declared that they are Christians and that they rely on God to guide them and to help them to be injury-free and perform well.

How an Athlete’s Faith in God Helps Them and Benefit Others

Although Hebrews 12:1-3 does not speak of a physical race, it can be applied to all athletes regardless of which sport they compete in.  We are instructed to put aside every weight and to run with patience the race that is set before us looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

God has a plan for every person, and it is not cookie cut. Each person’s path will be different, but God is in control of all. Eight athletes will not win the race but that does not mean that God did not sustain them and come through for them in that race. He will allow them to shine when it is their time. An athlete may not win a particular race, but they may have finished injury-free, ran a personal best, or perfected a part of their race that they had been working to improve. Yes, all eight would like to win but only one gets the gold medal.

Athletes face a lot of pressures and uncertainties in their careers. They train hard for years, but their performances can be affected by many factors, such as injuries, weather, competition, and even luck. Knowing that they can rely on God to sustain, protect, and provide for them, helps them to cope with the challenges and risks of their profession. Practices such as reading their bible, praying, repeating bible verses, and listening to gospel music help them to find comfort, strength, and motivation to pursue their goals. Training for competitive sports is not easy. Athletes go through rigorous training, forgo many things they like to eat, skip some activities they like, and miss participating in activities with family and friends at times. Believing in God and his supreme power can help an athlete get through those things.

The pressure of competing in their chosen sport is not just physically taxing but also mentally and emotionally pressuring. Many athletes have spoken about this publicly. Winning is great but it also brings additional pressures which cause some athletes to take drugs to enhance their performances. There is also the pressure to do media interviews, meet contractual obligations with sponsors, and meet the expectations of the fans as a role model. When a person knows who they are in Christ and can put everything into perspective based on who they know God is, some things do not daunt them. Things that may intimidate others may appear insignificant to them. Many verses in the Bible encourage us not to be afraid, and others assure us that God is in control of all situations. Athletes who meditate on those words and put them into practice can benefit immensely. It helps them to maintain humility and focus.

When an athlete suffers a serious injury, they can find support and hope in God’s word and from fellow Christians. The same is true whenever they are facing obstacles in their career. Having faith in God can be the difference between quitting or not quitting. Athletes have to be mentally tough to do well in competitive sports. They need a strong belief in their source and their abilities. When an athlete is not living up to the expectations of their fans and the public in general, they face harsh criticisms, name-calling, and ridicule.

One Athlete’s Story

In a recent interview on the Coach’s Desk Podcast and YouTube Channel, a 400m track athlete, Rusheen McDonald of Jamaica, spoke about the pain he endures in training and in competition. A few years ago, he had a car accident which resulted in injury to his spinal column.  Spinal fusion surgery was done with metal plates being used to hold the vertebra in place. If you know people who have gone through that kind of procedure, then you know of the ongoing pain and discomfort that some people suffer after. He also spoke about verbal abuse from fans, not just to him but to his mom. One fan, he said, went as far as to threaten him with a knife. I cannot even imagine how he has been able to rise above all that and keep going, but he has. At the recently concluded World Indoors Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, McDonald won the bronze medal in his event.

Winning Versus Losing

God can use wins or losses to draw an athlete closer to Him. 1 Corinthians 9:24 tells us that in a race all runners run but only one gets the prize. Athletes frequently express gratitude to God for their victories, but why is there a conspicuous absence of thanks in times of defeat? In interacting with a variety of athletes, juniors to professional and coaches a consistent trend has emerged. Regardless of the level of competition, in post-game or competition interviews, many of them thank God. In individual sports like track and field, some athletes do give thanks to God for allowing them to finish injury-free, but not many do so. Romans 8:28, “In all things God works for the good of those who love him”. The Bible also tells us that in everything we should give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Expressions such as "I wish to express gratitude to God for today's victory," or "Today's win wouldn't have been possible without God," have become commonplace. However, the consistent presence of gratitude towards God in post-game discussions highlights an interesting trend – the absence of thanks for defeat, injury, or humiliation. Notably missing are statements like "I want to thank God for this humiliating defeat," or "Thank you, God, for this season-ending ACL tear." This striking contrast, observed across various levels of sports from professional leagues to recreational settings, suggests a prevailing belief that God is associated with success and achievement while being overlooked during times of loss and adversity.

Serving God and Being His Witness

Some athletes feel that their faith is an important part of who they are and what they stand for. By talking about or demonstrating their faith, they hope to inspire others, especially young people, to follow their example and live according to their beliefs. By expressing their gratitude to God for the opportunities and achievements they have received, they inspire others to strive for greatness in their pursuits. By sharing their personal stories and values with their fans and the public, they encourage others to be bold about their faith in God and not be afraid to talk about it.

Christian athletes have some things in common, such as their dedication to their sport, their courage to share their faith, and their involvement in social causes. They also have different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that make them unique. Their success rate in their event varies depending on many factors, such as competition level, injury status, training regimen, and personal goals. Their faith seems to affect their performance in different ways, such as giving them motivation, peace, confidence, or gratitude.

Sports encompass diversity and vitality, serving as a platform for athletes to showcase their unique talents and personalities. Some opt to integrate their faith in God as an integral aspect of their identity and purpose. Consider a scenario: when a well-respected athlete, known for their exemplary behavior and adherence to sportsmanship, successfully executes a play and acknowledges God in that moment, do you perceive it as something commendable? Now, imagine another athlete, who has not upheld a flawless record of ethical conduct, achieving a remarkable athletic feat and then attributing it to God. How does this make you feel? Does it prompt reflection on the belief that God can employ anyone in any capacity He deems fit?

Victory in Defeat

The association between God and success often transforms winning into a type of favor, establishing an implicit link where winning is interpreted as a sign of divine approval. Yet, this article endeavors to convey an alternative viewpoint: that experiencing defeat or loss in sports does not indicate abandonment by or absence of God's favor. This perspective finds resonance in Christian narratives, which consistently portray defeat as an integral component of the spiritual journey.

By drawing parallels with biblical figures such as Jacob, Jonah, and Jesus, who encountered trials, setbacks, and isolation, the article contests the widespread belief that success solely indicates divine approval. It advocates for athletes to express gratitude regardless of victory or defeat, recognizing that loss can instill virtues and profound life teachings beyond mere triumph or failure. The analogy is made with Jesus opting for the cross and a crown of thorns as His symbols of victory, underscoring the divergence of the spiritual journey from earthly achievements.

Are you for or against Public Expressions of Faith by Athletes?

Some fans are indifferent, but others are annoyed when athletes express their faith, and say such comments are irrelevant or inappropriate. They feel that the athletes are imposing their beliefs on them. We know that many individuals are opposed to public display of faith and any attempt to influence them in this way.

The impact of these expressions within sports is challenging to quantify but can yield both positive and negative consequences. Positively, they may cultivate a spirit of inclusivity and respect among athletes and fans from diverse backgrounds and faiths. Additionally, they might instill a culture of appreciation and modesty among athletes who acknowledge that their achievements stem not solely from their own endeavors, but also from divine intervention.

Conversely, there could be negative implications. These gestures might engender discord and friction among athletes and supporters with differing backgrounds and beliefs. Moreover, they could potentially erode a culture of meritocracy and fairness, as some athletes may attribute their success or failure not just to their personal efforts but also to divine influence.

We are instructed that in everything we should give thanks, when we win, we should give thanks, when we lose, we should give thanks. I am glad when athletes publicly express thanks to the Lord Jesus for helping them succeed. I would also like to see those who do not win express thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ also.  God is present not only in touchdowns and triumphs but also in the heartbreak and gut punches of life, warranting gratitude in all circumstances.

Who God Blesses No Man Can Curse

You know, sometimes you'll run into folks who seem dead set on disliking or even attacking you, and you can't quite put your finger on why. It could be someone at work, in your community, or even within your own family. It's like they are competing with you, even though you're not competing with them at all. They've got issues with your work ethic, your personality, your appearance, your kindness, or maybe something else entirely. Ever had encounters with people like that? They might even go as far as spreading lies and rumors about you. It's almost as if you're their main target, especially when things seem to be going well for you. It makes you wonder if they're being used as pawns by the devil, trying to tear you down, doesn't it?

Look at the story of Balak and Balaam in the Old Testament, for instance. Balak, the king of Moab, wanted to curse the Israelites as they journeyed through his lands. He got this diviner named Balaam involved, thinking he could bring down curses upon them. But here's the kicker: Balaam couldn't do it. Despite all of Balak's efforts and promises, Balaam found himself unable to curse the Israelites. Instead, he was compelled by God to bless them. It's like he said, "God's not like us, changing His mind all the time. Once He decides to bless, that's it. No one can change it."

This just goes to show you how God's blessings are rock-solid. Once He decides to favor someone, there's no human force that can undo it, no matter how powerful or influential they think they are. Remember Job? He went through some serious trials, allowed by God Himself. Even Satan with all his tricks couldn't take Job's life without God's say-so (Job 2:6). It's a clear sign that God's got the final say over blessings and curses.

Jesus backs this up in the New Testament, in the Gospel of Matthew. He tells His followers not to worry about those who can only hurt the body but can't touch the soul. Instead, they should fear the One who can kill both body and soul and cast them into hell. He even points out how God keeps tabs on every little sparrow, making sure not a single one falls without His knowing. His message? If you're under God's protection, you don't have to sweat the schemes or curses of mere mortals.

So, take strength from God's word. His blessings aren't just feel-good sentiments; they're the real deal, showing His unwavering commitment to His people. When life gets tough, know that His blessings and protection are as steady as a rock. Even when storms rage and enemies gather, those walking in God's favor have nothing to fear. As the Bible states, "If God's on our side, who can stand against us?" (Romans 8:31).

Psalm 27 backs this up too, with the Psalmist boldly declaring God as their light and salvation. They're not afraid of anyone or anything, even when enemies come knocking. Remember, God's got your back too, just like He promised Abraham. He pledged to bless him and curse anyone who tried to curse him. That assurance is like a shield against any negativity that comes your way.

Psalm 27: 1-3, "The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid?  When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident."

When folks start coming at you for no reason, it might be due to projection. They may be projecting their insecurities onto you, feeling threatened by your success or traits they wish they had. Jealousy could be at play also, especially if they see you thriving in areas they struggle with. Sometimes it's just a misunderstanding, or maybe they're caught up in some social power struggle. Sadly, bias and prejudice can rear their ugly heads, based on race, appearance, or other factors. Sometimes too, personalities just don't mesh, leading to conflicts where there shouldn't be any.

Dealing with these situations calls for empathy, communication, and setting boundaries to keep relationships healthy. While the exact phrase might not be in the Bible word-for-word, its essence echoes throughout scripture. Remember, "Who God blesses no one can curse."

When you find yourself under attack, lean on prayer and let God shield you. Don't let bitterness take root, instead, pray for those who come against you. Keep your distance if needed, but always stay vigilant. Above all, trust in God to lead you and give you the courage to shine His light wherever you go. Let your life be a blessing to others, and let God's purpose for you shine bright. All glory to Him!

Trample the Devil When He Rises Against You

 God's Protective Covering

Whether you believe that the devil and his demons can attack you or not doesn’t matter. That will not make you immune to attacks by evil forces. Of greater importance, however, is whether or not you are firm in your belief in Jesus Christ, and that you know without a shadow of a doubt that you have been redeemed by His blood and that the devil, death, hell, and the grave have no power over you unless you give in.  The Devil knows that he has a short time to do his work (Rev 12:12), so he is constantly on the hunt to take us down (1 Peter 5:8). Jesus already told us that the battle has been won, but we will still be tested (James 1:2-6 and 1 Peter 1:6-7).

I grew up hearing my mother pray Psalm 91 every night. By the time I was 10 years old, I knew the words and could say them without reading from the Bible.  It gave me the sensation, way back then, that we were covered by God’s shadow and that we were safe. It has become one of my favorite Psalms. Whenever I pray that Psalm, regardless of what is happening around me, I feel the presence of God and I feel protected.

Sometimes though, it can feel like the whole host of hell has been let loose against us. At such times it is important to remember who Christ is, who we are in Him, and His promises to us. It is not certain who wrote Psalm 91 as no author is mentioned in the Hebrew text of this Psalm. Jewish tradition credits it to Moses, with David compiling it in his Book of Psalms. The Septuagint translation ascribes it to David. Regardless of who wrote it, it is a powerful Psalm that reassures us of God’s protection and deliverance from evil forces.

In times of uncertainty, fear, and adversity, finding solace in the unwavering protection of God can be a source of immense comfort and strength. Psalm 91 stands as a beacon of hope, offering profound reassurance to believers that they are enveloped in God's unfailing love and safeguarded from harm. Let us delve into the depths of this sacred psalm, drawing upon its timeless wisdom to affirm the enduring protection of our Heavenly Father.

We are met with words of steadfast assurance from the first verse: "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty" (Psalm 91:1). Here, we are reminded that those who seek refuge in the presence of God will find themselves under His divine protection, shielded from the storms of life that may seek to engulf them. Visualize the scene created by the words and experience the feeling you get from it.

Let's Explore These Verses

The imagery evoked by the Psalmist paints a vivid picture of God's unwavering protection: "He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge" (Psalm 91:4). Just as a mother bird shields her young beneath her wings, so too does God shield His beloved children from harm, providing a sanctuary of safety and peace amidst the chaos of the world.

In the face of adversity and the rising tide of evil forces, Psalm 91 offers a powerful declaration of God's omnipotence and sovereignty: "You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday" (Psalm 91:5-6). Even in the darkest of times, we are called to stand firm in our faith, trusting that God's protective hand will never falter. Take a minute to envisage all of those diverse scenes and mentally picture God keeping you safe, protected, and provided for in all of them. Isn’t the God you serve awesome?

Indeed, the promises contained within Psalm 91 serve as a testament to God's unchanging nature and His unwavering commitment to His people. "Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place - the Most High, who is my refuge - no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent" (Psalm 91:9 -10). In times of trial and tribulation, we can take refuge in the knowledge that God is our stronghold, our fortress, and our deliverer. I often pray this Psalm in the morning, and I just imagine God’s presence all around.  He is always there but if we are not in tune with His presence then we will be unaware.

As we reflect on the profound truths of Psalm 91, let us take heart in the assurance that God's protection knows no bounds. "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone" (Psalm 91:11-12). Even in life's most challenging moments, God's angels stand ready to watch over us, guiding our steps and ensuring our safety.

Verse 13 is powerful. Can you imagine walking on lions and serpents and being fearless and safe? Can you imagine trampling the old dragon, Satan, every time he comes against you? Just remember to call upon God. He says he will deliver you because you are His. He says He will save you…and believer, God keeps His promises!

Stand Firm

Let us cling to the timeless promises of Psalm 91 as a source of strength, courage, and unwavering faith. In the face of adversity, uncertainty, and the relentless onslaught of evil forces, may we find solace in the comforting embrace of our Heavenly Father, knowing that His protective hand is ever-present in our lives. As we journey forward, may we walk in the assurance of God's unfailing love and protection, trusting in His promises and resting securely in His unchanging faithfulness.

May you find comfort in His presence, strength in His promises, and peace in His love. Whenever you feel besieged or threatened by evil forces remember to read Psalm 91. May you emerge from those seasons of difficulty with a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper faith, and a greater appreciation for the goodness of God.

The Greatest Commandment: Love God, Love Others

I want to share with you a powerful insight that I learned from the words of Jesus Christ. He was once asked by a teacher of the law, "Master, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus replied, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Matthew 22:36-40)

What does this mean for us today? It means that the essence of God's law is love. Love for God and love for others. Love is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a choice and an action. Love is not just saying nice words or giving gifts, but doing what is best for the other person, even if it costs us something. Love is not just tolerating or accepting others but caring for them and seeking their good.

When we love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds, we are expressing our gratitude, devotion, and obedience to Him. We are acknowledging that He is our Creator, Savior, and Lord. We worship Him in spirit and in truth. We seek His will and His glory in everything we do.

When we love our neighbor as ourselves, we are following the example of Jesus, who laid down His life for us. We are treating others as we want to be treated. We are respecting their dignity and value as God's image-bearers. We are showing kindness, compassion, and mercy to those in need. We are promoting peace, justice, and harmony in our society.

The First and Great Commandment:

The Heart is often seen as the seat of emotions and feelings. It symbolizes our capacity for love, compassion, and connection with others. In loving God with all our hearts, we are called to foster a deep emotional bond with the divine, allowing our actions to be guided by love rather than obligation or fear.

The Mind represents intellect, reason, and consciousness. It is through our minds that we can comprehend the world around us, reflect on our existence, and seek an understanding of spiritual truths. To love God with all our minds is to engage in constant learning and contemplation of divine principles, striving to align our thoughts with higher wisdom.

The Soul is perhaps the most enigmatic of the three, often associated with our true essence beyond physical form. It embodies our will, our life force, and our eternal nature. Loving God with all our souls means committing our very being to a relationship with the Creator, seeking to fulfill our spiritual purpose, and maintaining a state of harmony with the divine.

Loving God with all our hearts involves the depths of our emotions and affections, while loving with all our souls signifies a commitment of our very essence. Adding the dimension of the mind reinforces the intellectual and contemplative aspects of this divine connection.

This commandment prompts believers to prioritize their relationship with God above all else, acknowledging the Creator's sovereignty and recognizing the significance of spiritual devotion in shaping one's character. When we love the Lord with our heart, mind, and soul we will follow His words and do them and this will make life better for us.

The Second Commandment: Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself:

Building upon the foundation of the first commandment, Jesus introduces the second commandment, emphasizing the interconnection of love for God and love for others. "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" reflects a universal principle that transcends cultural, religious, and societal boundaries. It invites individuals to extend the same love, compassion, and understanding to others as they would to themselves.

This commandment underscores the importance of empathy, kindness, and selflessness in human relationships. By treating others with the same care and respect we desire for ourselves, we contribute to the creation of a harmonious and just society.

Loving others can indeed be a complex and challenging aspect of human relationships. People are diverse, with different personalities, backgrounds, and experiences, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and difficulties in forming connections. However, the ability to love and connect with others is also a fundamental and rewarding part of the human experience.

Reasons why loving people can be challenging:

Individual Differences: People have unique perspectives, values, and ways of expressing themselves. Understanding and appreciating these differences can be demanding but crucial for building meaningful connections.

Vulnerability: Love often requires opening oneself up to others, which can be accompanied by feelings of vulnerability. Fear of rejection or disappointment may hinder one's ability to fully engage in loving relationships.

Communication: Effective communication is essential for any relationship, and misunderstandings can easily occur. Learning to express oneself clearly and actively listening to others can help overcome communication barriers.

Past Experiences: Past hurts and traumas can impact a person's ability to trust and love. It's important to be mindful of these experiences and work towards healing to foster healthier connections.

Expectations: Unrealistic expectations about relationships or others' behavior can lead to disappointment. Recognizing and managing expectations can contribute to more fulfilling and harmonious connections.

Tips for navigating the challenges of loving people:

Practice Empathy: Strive to understand others' perspectives, feelings, and experiences. Empathy fosters compassion and helps build stronger connections.

Set Boundaries: Establishing healthy boundaries is crucial for maintaining individual well-being within relationships. Communicate your needs and respect the boundaries of others.

Cultivate Patience: Building meaningful connections takes time. Be patient with yourself and others as you navigate the complexities of relationships.

Foster Communication: Open and honest communication is the foundation of any healthy relationship. Encourage a safe space for sharing thoughts and feelings.

Self-Reflection: Regularly reflect on your own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Understanding yourself better can contribute to more authentic and fulfilling relationships.

While loving people may present challenges, the rewards of meaningful connections, support, and shared experiences make the effort worthwhile. It's a continuous journey of growth, understanding, and compassion. Loving people is not easy. It requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to accept others as they are. In a professional setting, this can be even more challenging as we navigate different personalities and work styles. However, the effort to foster a compassionate environment can lead to more collaborative and productive teams. Embracing diversity and practicing empathy are key components in building strong professional relationships.

The Unity of the Commandments:

Jesus succinctly states that "on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." This declaration implies that the entirety of religious teachings and moral guidelines can be encapsulated within the framework of loving God and loving others. These commandments serve as a moral compass, guiding individuals in their actions, decisions, and interactions with the world.

The holistic nature of these commandments also highlights the interconnectedness of spirituality and social responsibility. True devotion to God is expressed not only in rituals and prayers but also in the genuine concern for the well-being of others. In this unified approach, believers are called to be ambassadors of love, reflecting the divine virtues in their daily lives.

Conclusion:

These two commandments are not separate or contradictory, but complementary and consistent. They are the foundation of all moral principles and ethical standards. They are the summary of all God's teachings and expectations. They are the fulfillment of all God's promises and purposes.

If we want to live a life that pleases God and blesses others, we need to remember these two commandments and practice them daily. They are not easy to follow, but they are possible with God's grace and power. They are not burdensome to obey, but they are joyful to experience. They are not outdated or irrelevant, but they are timeless and universal.

Let us love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds. Let us love our neighbor as ourselves. This is the way of wisdom, happiness, and holiness. This is the true way of life in Christ.

(This is part 1 of a 3-part blog post.)

Pain and the Bible

If someone tells you that you are a pain in the neck, then the situation must be serious! Those who suffer from any kind of chronic pain on an ongoing basis, know how debilitating it is. Christians and non-Christians alike suffer from pain. It is neither selective nor partial. Its effects are not only physical but mental and emotional. It can even affect your spiritual health. We have included some bible verses that can offer you comfort.  Pain is a complex and multifaceted experience that can arise from various sources and affect individuals differently.

Jabez asked God to keep him free from pain. This is popularly called the prayer of Jabez and is found in the Book of Chronicles.

1 Chronicles 4:10 (NIV)

Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

This does not mean that if we pray this verse God will take away our pain. We would be happy if He does but we ask and trust that in His wisdom and power, He will do for us what is best.

Two of the Common Causes of Pain

Pain is a complex and multifaceted experience that can arise from various sources and affect individuals differently. For this three-part blog post, we will focus on two of the common causes:

Musculoskeletal Pain:

Musculoskeletal pain, affecting muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and joints, is one of the most prevalent types of pain.Inflammation of the tissues in that area will also contribute to pain.

.

Causes include injuries (eg. strains, sprains, and fractures), overuse, poor posture, and conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Neuropathic Pain:

Neuropathic pain results from damage or dysfunction of the nervous system, leading to abnormal signaling and perception of pain.      Conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, sciatica, and postherpetic neuralgia are common causes of neuropathic pain.

Groups of People More Prone to Suffering from Pain

Some groups of people are more prone to pain based on factors such as age, activity, and gender. These include:

Older Adults - Aging is often accompanied by an increased prevalence of chronic conditions, musculoskeletal degeneration, and neurological disorders, all of which can contribute to pain.

Women - Research suggests that women may experience pain more frequently and intensely than men, particularly due to conditions like menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia, and endometriosis.

Athletes – Athletes may experience pain fairly frequently as they engage in strenuous physical activities while conditioning their bodies to perform well in competitions. They are also prone to injuries. Athletes who perform in all categories of sport are likely to get injured at one point or another. Some of these injuries are more serious than others and can be career-ending or even result in death. Others are easy to recover from or can be managed by proper treatment.

Individuals Injured in Accidents – Many people receive life-changing injuries from motor vehicle accidents, accidents related to their jobs (eg. Firemen and construction workers), and physical activities that they engage in as a hobby or for leisure (eg. rock climbing, bungee-jumping, and jet skiing).

Individuals with Chronic Illnesses - Those living with chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or cancer are at a higher risk of experiencing persistent pain.

Individuals with Mental Health Conditions - Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can exacerbate pain perception and lower pain tolerance according to research. In my opinion, being someone who suffers from pain, that may be true, but sometimes people just do not believe that a person is experiencing pain to the extent that they state. Pain is not visible and rating it is subjective.

The Impact of Pain

Physical Impact:

Pain can significantly impair mobility, diminish physical function, and interfere with activities of daily living.

Chronic pain may lead to muscle tension, decreased flexibility, and changes in posture, further exacerbating discomfort.

Emotional Impact:

Pain can trigger emotional responses such as frustration, irritability, anxiety, depression, and feelings of helplessness.

Chronic pain may lead to social withdrawal, isolation, and a decreased quality of life. When you feel that you have been dealt a bad hand take comfort in the bible verse below.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

In the context of chronic pain, this verse means that this pain will not last forever because we know that we will be given a new body when Christ returns.

Revelation 21 verses 1- 4 states what will happen when He returns. It ends by telling us that there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things will be no more.

What a wonderful promise!

Cognitive Impact:

Pain can impair concentration, memory, and decision-making abilities, affecting cognitive function and productivity.

Chronic pain may contribute to cognitive decline and an increased risk of developing conditions such as dementia.

Social Impact:

Pain can strain relationships, limit social interactions, and hinder participation in social and recreational activities.

Individuals may experience stigma, misunderstanding, or skepticism regarding their pain experience, leading to feelings of isolation and alienation.

Research continues to shed light on the intricate mechanisms underlying pain perception, individual differences in pain experiences, and effective strategies for pain management. By recognizing the diverse causes and consequences of pain, healthcare providers can tailor treatment approaches to address the unique needs of each individual, promoting optimal physical, emotional, and social well-being.

Spiritual Impact:

Chronic pain can affect your spiritual life. When you ask, “Why me?” or wonder why God doesn’t deliver you from this terrible affliction you can begin to be angry or to doubt His goodness. Suffering excruciating pain may also cause the individual to draw closer to God as they pray, read their Bible, and seek solace from Him.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4  (NIV)

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

Even though you or a loved one may be suffering from pain you may be able to comfort others and encourage them because of the experience.

My Personal Experience with People’s Reaction to My Injury and Pain

You cannot touch pain or objectively measure it as far as I know. When people, including health professionals, cannot understand the cause of pain they may believe that you are faking it, exaggerating it, or that you are imagining that you have the pain. When I suffered a serious neck injury in a motor vehicle accident and was experiencing chronic pain and symptoms, my co-workers felt that nothing was wrong with me. They did not hesitate to make fun of me as I was wearing a neck brace, and some told me that they did not think it was serious. When I traveled as a wheelchair passenger on airlines, it was sometimes difficult to get help even when I explained the nature of my condition.

Years after I suffered that injury, a co-worker whom I had known since high school had an accident. She told me that her situation was not as serious as mine but when she felt the pain she said, “Oh my God! Is this what she was going through!”, referring to my situation. I thank God that I know better than to hold it against them. When you have never experienced something, it is sometimes difficult to conceptualize what it is. The nature of pain makes it even worse.

If you have a loved one or close friend who is suffering from excruciating pain, I implore you not to assume that they are lying or exaggerating as that attitude can affect the person. In addition, it affects them mentally and emotionally, especially at the outset, when they have to accept and adjust to the changes they have to make in their life. As a family member or friend, you may have to adjust too, but please try to show empathy to your loved one.

Challenges for Family Members, Friends, and Caregivers

The transition from seeing someone vibrant and independent to witnessing them struggle with pain, mood swings, and the inability to engage in activities they once enjoyed can evoke a range of emotions and present numerous challenges. Common challenges include:

For Family Members and Friends

1. Emotional Distress

Seeing a loved one in pain and distress can evoke a range of emotions, including sadness, grief, frustration, and helplessness. Witnessing their suffering and the inability to alleviate it can take a significant emotional toll on family members and friends.

2. Adjustment to New Roles

Family members and friends may find themselves thrust into unfamiliar roles as caregivers, advocates, and support systems for their loved ones. Adjusting to these new responsibilities and expectations can be overwhelming and require significant adaptation.

3. Strain on Relationships

The dynamics within relationships may undergo significant changes. Communication breakdowns, disagreements over care decisions, and feelings of resentment or guilt can strain relationships between family members and friends, leading to tension and conflict.

4. Loss of Connection

The injured individual's inability to participate in activities they once enjoyed can lead to a loss of connection and shared experiences within the family and social circles. Family gatherings, outings, and social events may be impacted, resulting in feelings of isolation and loneliness for both the injured individual and their loved ones.

5. Financial Pressure

The financial implications of caring for an injured loved one can be substantial. Medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and lost wages due to caregiving responsibilities can place a strain on family finances, leading to financial stress and uncertainty.

6. Balancing Responsibilities:

Family members and friends may struggle to balance their caregiving responsibilities with other aspects of their lives, such as work, relationships, and personal interests. The demands of caregiving can be all-consuming, leaving little time and energy for self-care and other obligations.

7. Guilt and Self-Blame:

Family members and friends may experience feelings of guilt and self-blame if an accident results in an injury causing pain.  They may question whether they could have prevented the accident or if they can do more to alleviate their loved one's suffering. These feelings can exacerbate emotional distress and impact their ability to provide effective support and care.

For Caregivers

Whether a caregiver is a family member, a friend, or is unrelated to the patient, challenges may arise. This may be difficult if the patient is having difficulty in coming to terms with their situation.  If the onset of pain is sudden, as in the case of an accident or a recent chronic illness, and they are losing their independence, they may not readily accept the limitations placed on them. They may even refuse help.

Caregivers often grapple with the delicate balance between respecting the individual's desire for independence and ensuring their safety and well-being. It can be challenging to convince the individual to accept help without compromising their sense of autonomy and dignity. Caregivers must create a safe and non-judgmental space for the individual to express their feelings and concerns, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration in the caregiving relationship.

Navigating these challenges requires caregivers to draw upon their professional skills, empathy, and resilience. They should maintain a patient-centered approach while prioritizing their own well-being, seek support from others, and maintain clear boundaries to prevent caregiver burnout. By approaching caregiving with compassion and understanding, caregivers can create a supportive environment that encourages acceptance, healing, and mutual respect.

Decision-making as it Relates to Pain Management

Experiencing chronic pain can be very crippling so we should always seek professional help and do what is necessary to alleviate it. In cases where you have to live with the pain for the rest of your life, you should learn how best to manage it. Once you know the root cause, research to get as much information about it as possible. You should not be scared to ask your doctor or healthcare professional questions about your condition and any treatment recommended. After all, it is your body, and you will have to live with the consequences of any action taken. This is far more important than many people realize. Some things once done cannot be reversed so it is better to take the time to understand what you are getting into before rushing into it.

I know people who have followed their doctor's recommendations and ended up being okay and others who are having to live with serious regrets. Thorough research cannot be over-emphasized. You should:

1. Seek information about the cause of the pain and any related condition.

2. Thoroughly research the implications of any procedure or intervention recommended including – the level of experience and success rate of the professional who will carry it out and the facility where it will be done. Find out about the experiences of others who have had similar interventions by talking to people and researching online. Many people share their information on different platforms and forums. It is up to you to evaluate the information and draw your own conclusions.

3. Seek second and even third opinions.

4. Research the side effects of any medication recommended. There may be better choices.

Armed with this information you can make an informed decision. If your health insurance company will not pay for certain types of treatment, it is up to you to decide whether you are able or willing to pay out of pocket for certain products or therapies.

Part 2

In the second part of this 3-part series, which will be published next week, we will discuss some herbs that can be used for pain relief.
