Treating and Managing Pain Using Alternative Medicine Therapies

(This is the final of a 3-part blog post entitled,Treating and Managing Chronic Pain Using Natural Products and Alternative Medicine Modalities”.)

Introduction

Living with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain can be very challenging, as it impacts every aspect of your life. Chronic pain can significantly diminish your quality of life by hindering mobility and affecting mood and productivity. While conventional treatments like medication and physical therapy offer relief to many, some individuals seek alternative therapies like acupuncture, magnetic resonance, and upper cervical chiropractic treatment hoping to find more relief. In this blog post, we look at some of these treatments, how they work, and how effective they are for those suffering from musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Treatment

Upper cervical chiropractic treatment is a unique type of chiropractic care that zeroes in on the alignment and movement of the two topmost vertebrae in your neck (upper cervical spine), called the atlas and the axis. Upper cervical chiropractors receive specialized training to detect and correct any misalignments or subluxations in this region, which can impact your overall well-being in various ways.

This approach is precise and relies mostly on the use of sound waves. There is very little physical manipulation, if any, compared to regular chiropractic. It typically involves multiple sessions to maintain proper alignment of the axis and atlas, thereby aiding in the realignment of other vertebrae throughout the body.

There are several ways in which Upper cervical chiropractic treatment can provide relief from musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain:

Spinal Alignment: Misalignments in the upper cervical spine can disrupt nerve function, causing pain and dysfunction throughout the body. Upper cervical chiropractic adjustments aim to restore proper alignment, easing pressure on nerves and promoting optimal nerve function.

Nerve Regulation: The upper cervical spine houses the brainstem, a vital component of the central nervous system responsible for essential functions and sensory messages. When this area becomes misaligned, it disrupts nerve signals, leading to increased pain and other issues. Through upper cervical chiropractic treatment, we can address these misalignments, calming nerve activity and reducing pain sensitivity.

Muscle Relaxation: Improper alignment of the upper cervical spine often leads to muscle tension and imbalances, resulting in musculoskeletal pain. Adjustments in the atlas and axis (the first two vertebrae) can alleviate this tension, restoring proper muscle function. This not only relieves discomfort but also enhances mobility.

The Effectiveness of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Treatment for Pain Management

Research on the effectiveness of upper cervical chiropractic treatment for musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain is still evolving, but existing evidence suggests good results.

Some clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of upper cervical chiropractic treatment in reducing pain and improving functionality, particularly for conditions such as chronic neck pain, headaches, and migraines. Many individuals who have undergone upper cervical chiropractic treatment report significant reductions in pain, improved range of motion, and enhanced well-being overall.

Upper cervical chiropractic treatment offers a targeted and individualized approach to pain management, focusing on the specific needs of each patient. By addressing underlying misalignments in the upper cervical spine, this therapy aims to correct the root cause of pain and dysfunction.

Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic treatment is a hands-on approach to healthcare focused on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those affecting the spine. Chiropractors utilize a variety of manual techniques, including spinal adjustments, joint manipulation, and soft tissue therapy, to address misalignments, restore mobility, and alleviate pain.

Chiropractic treatment can provide relief from musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain by aligning the pine, helping to regulate nerve function, and helping the muscles to relax. This is somewhat similar to the pain relief afforded by upper cervical chiropractic except that it requires physical manipulation applied to any area of the vertebral column or other areas of the body.  Upper cervical chiropractic uses sound waves and focuses on the alignment of the first and second vertebrae, is precision-based, and involves very little if any physical manipulation.  Joint dysfunction can contribute to pain and stiffness. Chiropractic adjustments aim to restore proper joint mechanics, allowing for improved movement and reduced pain.

The Effectiveness of Chiropractic Treatment for Pain Management

A large number of clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for various pain conditions, including lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches. These studies have shown improvements in pain intensity, functional outcomes, and quality of life of patients receiving chiropractic care. Many individuals who have undergone chiropractic treatment report significant reductions in pain, improved mobility, and enhanced overall well-being. These patient reports provide valuable insights into the benefits of chiropractic care.

Chiropractic treatment offers a natural and holistic approach to managing musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain, addressing underlying imbalances, and promoting optimal function of the body's nervous and musculoskeletal systems. By restoring proper alignment and function to the spine and musculoskeletal system, chiropractic care can help people find relief and regain control of their lives in the face of chronic pain.

Magnetic Resonance Treatment

Magnetic resonance treatment, also known as pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), involves exposing the body to electromagnetic fields with specific frequencies and intensities. These electromagnetic fields are believed to penetrate tissues and exert various biological effects, influencing cellular activity to promote healing.

Magnetic resonance treatment is believed to alleviate musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain through several mechanisms:

Pain Modulation: Electromagnetic fields have the potential to influence pain signaling pathways within the body, resulting in decreased pain intensity and enhanced overall comfort.

Inflammation Reduction: Studies indicate that magnetic resonance treatment may aid in reducing inflammation, a common culprit behind pain in conditions like arthritis and neuropathy.

Tissue Regeneration: Electromagnetic fields could stimulate tissue repair and regeneration, expediting the healing process for injured or compromised tissues.

Nerve Regulation: By adjusting nerve activity, magnetic resonance treatment can regulate the transmission of pain signals, offering potential relief for neuropathic pain.

The Effectiveness of Magnetic Resonance Treatment for Pain Management

Although relatively new, there have been generally positive results from this type of therapy:

Some clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of magnetic resonance treatment in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes in conditions such as osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and diabetic neuropathy.

Evidence suggests that the benefits of magnetic resonance treatment may extend beyond the treatment period, providing sustained relief for individuals with chronic pain.

As with any treatment, responses to magnetic resonance treatment can vary among individuals. Factors such as the nature and severity of the pain condition, individual physiology, and treatment protocol may influence outcomes.

By using the power of electromagnetic fields, this type of therapy aims to promote healing and alleviate pain at the cellular level, addressing the pain at its source.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique originating from traditional Chinese medicine. It includes the gentle insertion of thin needles into precise points on the body, referred to as acupuncture points or acupoints. These points are thought to align with pathways called meridians, through which vital energy, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"), circulates. In line with traditional Chinese medicine principles, stimulating these points is believed to rebalance the flow of energy throughout the body, stimulating natural healing processes.

Acupuncture is thought to influence the body in various ways that can help alleviate musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain:

Pain Modulation: Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals. This can help reduce pain intensity and improve overall comfort.

Inflammation Reduction: Research suggests that acupuncture may have anti-inflammatory effects, which can be beneficial for conditions characterized by inflammation, such as arthritis or neuropathic pain.

Nerve Regulation: Acupuncture may help regulate the function of the nervous system, including the transmission of pain signals. By modulating nerve activity, acupuncture can influence how pain is perceived and processed by the brain.

Muscle Relaxation: Tight muscles and muscle spasms are common contributors to musculoskeletal pain. Acupuncture can help promote muscle relaxation, relieving tension and discomfort.

The Effectiveness of Acupuncture Treatment for Pain Management

Several studies have looked at acupuncture's potential for relieving musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain, and have offered a range of findings, most of which are positive:

Numerous randomized controlled trials have shown acupuncture's effectiveness in diminishing pain and enhancing physical function in ailments like osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic lower back pain. Certain research indicates that acupuncture's benefits may extend beyond the treatment period, granting prolonged relief for those grappling with chronic pain.

Though many people find significant pain reduction through acupuncture, individual responses can differ. Elements like the type and severity of the pain condition, personal physiology, and treatment adherence may influence outcomes.  Acupuncture offers a holistic approach to managing musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain, addressing both the physical and energetic aspects of health. Ultimately, acupuncture represents a valuable tool for pain management, offering a safe, natural, and potentially transformative approach to healing for those living with chronic pain.

Quantum Biofeedback Treatment

Quantum biofeedback treatment is a non-invasive therapeutic approach that utilizes advanced technology to assess and rebalance the body's energy fields. This form of therapy is grounded in the principles of quantum physics, which suggests that everything in the universe, including the human body, is composed of energy, and interconnected through quantum fields.

During a quantum biofeedback session, the individual is connected to a device that measures subtle energy fluctuations within the body. The device then provides real-time feedback and stimuli to help the body self-regulate and achieve a state of balance and harmony.

Quantum biofeedback treatment offers several mechanisms by which it can potentially alleviate musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain:

Energy Regulation: Quantum biofeedback works to pinpoint and rectify imbalances within the body's energy fields, which could be contributing to discomfort and issues with function. By bringing these energy pathways back into balance, this therapy aims to support overall health and well-being.

Stress Reduction: Chronic pain often comes hand in hand with stress and emotional strain, which can worsen symptoms. Through quantum biofeedback treatment, individuals can reach a state of great relaxation, easing stress levels and generating feelings of tranquility and calmness.

Mind-Body Connection: Quantum biofeedback acknowledges the deep connection between the mind and body, recognizing how thoughts, emotions, and beliefs can impact physical well-being.

The Effectiveness of Quantum Biofeedback Treatment for Pain Management

Research on the effectiveness of quantum biofeedback treatment for musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain is still emerging, but many individuals who have undergone quantum biofeedback treatment report significant reductions in pain, improved mood, and enhanced overall well-being.

Quantum biofeedback treatment takes a holistic approach to pain management, addressing the underlying imbalances and stressors that contribute to pain and discomfort. By promoting balance and harmony within the body, the therapy aims to facilitate healing on multiple levels.

Quantum biofeedback treatment is tailored to the unique needs of each individual, allowing for personalized assessment and intervention. This individualized approach ensures that the therapy addresses specific pain concerns and targets areas of imbalance within the body. It offers a modern and holistic approach to managing musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain, utilizing the power of advanced technology to promote healing and well-being.

Ultimately, quantum biofeedback treatment holds promise for those seeking alternatives to conventional pain management approaches. It addresses the root causes of pain and promotes balance within the body, so this therapy can help individuals find relief and reclaim their lives from the grip of chronic pain.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or Tapping

Tapping combines elements of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. It involves gently tapping on specific acupressure points of the body while focusing on addressing emotional or physical distress. The idea behind tapping is that disruptions in the body's energy system, as identified in traditional Chinese medicine, can contribute to physical and emotional ailments, including pain.

Tapping is said to relieve pain through several means:

Stress Reduction: Chronic pain often coexists with stress and emotional distress, which can elevate symptoms. Tapping aims to reduce stress levels by calming the nervous system and promoting relaxation, which may help alleviate pain.

Energy Balance: Tapping on specific acupressure points is believed to restore balance to the body's energy system, addressing blockages or disruptions that contribute to pain and discomfort.

Emotional Release: Pain can be intertwined with emotional issues or past traumas. By addressing underlying emotional factors through tapping, individuals may experience relief from both physical and emotional pain.

The Effectiveness of EFT Treatment for Pain Management

By tapping into the body's natural healing mechanisms and addressing the mind-body connection, recognizing the influence of thoughts, emotions, and beliefs on physical health, many individuals find relief. While scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is still evolving, many individuals have reported positive outcomes from incorporating tapping into their pain management strategies.

Rife Frequency Therapy

Rife therapy, also known as Rife frequency therapy, is an alternative healing method that involves using electromagnetic frequency (EMF) devices to address a range of health concerns, like chronic pain. It is based on the ideas of Royal Raymond Rife, a scientist and inventor from the early 20th century. Rife suggested that specific frequencies could target and eliminate harmful pathogens while supporting the body's natural healing processes.

In Rife therapy, devices emit low-energy electromagnetic waves at precise frequencies thought to resonate with particular tissues or microorganisms. Proponents of this therapy claim that these frequencies can ease pain and aid healing by tackling the root causes of various health issues, including musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain. It seems to be particularly beneficial for pain stemming from microbial infections or imbalances in the body.

Patients or users undergo regular sessions where they are exposed to the selected frequencies for a predetermined duration. The chosen frequencies are emitted through a Rife device, which can be in the form of a handheld device, a mat, or a machine with various attachments.

The Effectiveness of Rife Treatment for Pain Management

While some individuals find relief and improved quality of life through this therapy, its effectiveness varies from person to person. If pain stems from microbial infections or imbalances targeted by Rife frequencies, individuals may experience greater relief compared to cases where pain originates from other sources.

As with any alternative treatment, including those discussed in this article, it is essential to consult with qualified healthcare professionals and consider individual circumstances before incorporating Rife therapy into a pain management regimen.

Actions You Can Take to Help Yourself

If you or someone close to you is suffering from chronic pain, which you are told can only be addressed by spinal fusion which involves the use of metal plates and screws, you need to do your research so that you can be prepared to ask your doctor relevant questions before deciding on the best course of action to take.

Before taking any medication for pain that you are told is permanent and can only be treated with pharmaceutical products, it is important to do your research. Make sure that you are aware of the side effects and long-term effects.

Carry out your research to see if there are alternative therapies, natural products, or remedies that will offer you pain relief and help you with pain management.

Be aware that your health insurance may not cover some of these therapies so you would have to pay out of pocket. Some insurance companies may require you to pay and then they reimburse you. Also, some practitioners do not accept insurance but will sign the claim forms for you to submit.

Also, ask your doctor if you can integrate any alternative therapy that you think will help into your conventional treatment plan.

I have personally found that although physical therapy offers short-term relief for neck and back pain resulting from herniated discs and nerve impingement, eventually the benefits diminish. Rife, EFT, Quantum Biofeedback Therapy, and Magnetic Resonance Therapy, all gave me some degree of relief during the periods that I used them.  I have never tried chiropractic as based on the nature of the injury I suffered it could be risky.  The therapy that has worked the best for me is upper cervical chiropractic.

Initially, upper cervical chiropractic therapy requires frequent weekly and monthly visits to the practitioner. First images of the neck area are taken and the adjustment or correction is made. Once your body has adjusted to the realignment of your cervical spine, and it is holding in place, visits become less frequent and can be once per quarter, semi-annually, or perhaps even annually.  It all depends on your situation, how well your body reacts to the treatment, and how well you follow the instructions given by the upper cervical doctor.

Upper cervical doctors are usually found only in large cities. I was fortunate to have one near me, only because she is from the area. She also understood my type of injury having had a similar injury herself. It was this type of treatment that helped her and was the reason she changed careers to become an upper cervical chiropractor.   Having a doctor who understands what one is going through helps a lot.

Summary

Living with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain can be challenging, but alternative therapies offer promising avenues for relief and healing. From Upper cervical chiropractic treatment to acupuncture, magnetic resonance therapy to tapping, these natural approaches address the root causes of pain while promoting overall health and well-being.

By embracing a holistic approach to pain management and exploring natural products such as cinnamon, curcumin from turmeric, and white willow, along with alternative therapies, individuals can find relief from chronic pain and regain control of their lives. Understanding your condition can help you in your decision-making and in managing the pain intensity. Remember to research thoroughly, consult with healthcare professionals, and prioritize self-care practices to support your journey toward pain relief and optimal wellness.
